Year 2017 in review

Ah, the year 2017! An interesting year! (just apparently not interesting enough to write about)

Year 2017 | 2017 to 2018

First and foremost, yes, I know that I haven’t been really using this in the year 2017. I think the same issue came up that I mentioned in the previous (non-guest) post. I really didn’t have that much overall to report. But as I like to do, here is my year in review.

So let’s go down the list.

Firstly, Ashley moved here from Utah after getting a job as a revenue manager at a hotel in Denver. She moved to an apartment on the north side of Greenwood Village (though technically it’s Denver). Needless to say, I am quite happy because of this. It was difficult maintaining a relationship with someone in a different city. Now we are twenty minutes from one another (if there is no traffic) and we meet up at least once a week (though often times more) plus we both get Sundays together due to my work schedule.

Speaking of work, while I am still with Trustwave in the year 2017, some things have changed. I don’t fault my previous boss, but he and I really didn’t gel well. I know he was trying hard, and with my constant need to change my schedule, I am sure I wasn’t the easiest to manage. However, he has since changed positions and has even changed countries so I hope he is happy with his new role.

Needless to say, my stress levels went down at work and my performance metrics have gone up. I get along great with my current boss and, while I may change jobs in the future, I am content where I am now. I am even getting along with people who hated me from day one. Not really sure what happened there, but I can’t complain about this new development.

Health-wise, I still have my cough that the doctor says is nothing to worry about. I am changing insurance in 2018 and will have a whole new crop of doctors so I will get a second opinion from the new doctors. Ever since changing bosses, my blood pressure has gone down. Additionally, thanks to a new diet, I’ve lost more weight. I plan on losing more weight in 2018. So far, I’ve lost around 30 pounds.

I did get a new vehicle. My old Honda CRV needed a lot of work to keep it driveable. However, I decided that it was time to get a new vehicle. To that end, I purchased a year 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

I do like the gas mileage and the features. Firstly, it gets about 35 MPG which is 15 higher than my old car. It is also a hybrid so it functions off electric motors and, in traffic, can do 40 MPG or higher. I have had some minor issues with it. For example, the nav system locks up sometimes, but a reboot fixes it. I did have one critical issue where it refused to start and I had to have it towed to the dealership. Here is hoping that doesn’t happen again.

Overall though, I’ve mostly been doing what I usually do. I’ve done a few new experiences with Ashley and said goodbye to old friends. For example, in year 2017, Julia, a former girlfriend whom I’d become quite close with ever since we broke up, moved away to Michigan. She wouldn’t know this as I tend not to let things like this show, but I nearly cried at her going away party. I tried to keep things light and happy though.

I did go and visit with Ashley’s family in Utah in September. We spent the weekend at a resort and I got to spend more time with them. The last time, I was there for Christmas and got to meet them briefly over an evening. For Christmas this year, we are doing it again, so that will be interesting. As a result of that, I will be doing Christmas with my family a week early, but it works out for both myself and my sister so that we can go see our other families.

In 2018, the plan exists to move in with Ashley. Once my lease is up we will move in. Not sure where yet, but in February-ish, we will start looking and see if we can find a place we like. My lease isn’t up until June so we have a little while.

Anyways, that is the basic happenings of year 2017. It wasn’t a majorly eventful year, but I will honestly try to do even more in 2018 as far as blogging. Just had too many irons in the fire this year.

Here is to 2018!

Canada Days 4-8

Canada Days 4-8

Nothing too much to report for these days. I mostly worked and went back to the hotel. On day 7 I attended a hiring fair for my company. Sadly, most of the people there were Developers and not operations. We might have 1-2 though to fill the security operations center here. Did also spend day 7 with the recruiting team (after the hiring fair). If you are looking for a job in the Waterloo, Kitchner area though let me know. We are looking for Developers and Operations people.

So they posted my Ignite Denver 20 video. If this link breaks I’ll be sure to update it. Hope you enjoy it.

There were some staunch differences between Denver and Fort Collins. One thing that I am still undecided on, although it helped, is the two run throughs before the event. I think I did pretty good up in Fort Collins without the run throughs, but I do admit that in this case, it helped the overall presentation. I suppose that in the case of Fort Collins, I ended up practicing it more because there wasn’t a mandatory run through, where as with Ignite Denver I simply threw something together and worked it out in front of the group.

Here is my Ignite Fort Collins talk:

What do you think?

Otherwise, I hope to see some of you there. There are a lot of great talks tonight. Here is the list: (subject to change)

Jacob Anderson – The 10 things every computer repair person wish you tried/knew
Ravi Raman – Why You Should Quit Your Job To Travel The World
Elizabeth Boese – You Love What You Find Time For
Joanne Burke Peterson – Destination: Procrastination
Meridith Grundei – Don’t just sit there…go out and fucking PLAY!
Gabriel DiCristofaro – Lizard Brains and Black Marbles
Shelsea Ochoa – Toolkit for a New Paradigm
Helene Kwong – Ni Hao, Hot Dog Vendor!

I know that some of the above are no longer being given due to the presenters backing out, but I’d say most are still a go.

Regardless it should be a fun evening. I’ll post a YouTube link when they post it. I’ll let you know how it goes. Now, I’d better get back to practicing!

Weekend with the family, but not mine.

Meet the parents

So this weekend was the weekend to meet the parents.

Julia graduated this weekend from Nursing school and her parents flew in for the occasion. As a bonus, Julia was throwing a party to celebrate and I invited my parents to the event. Therefore, I got to meet the parents and they got to meet each other as well all in the course of a weekend.

Overall, I think the weekend went well. We took them on a tour of Estes Park, took them to Casa Bonita (prepares for Coloradans to mock him) and generally had a very good time of it. Her parents are very nice. Her brother is about as much of a geek as I am. I look forward to many more such meetings in the future. Julia has a nice family.

There was talk of going out there in August (or was it October?) and I’d be happy to go to a state I’ve never been to.

Countdown to Celtic

logofinal2[1]

The festival is coming. Cheyenne here I come. If anyone is interested, it is the 13th of June through the 15th at the depot plaza in Cheyenne. Nothing much happens until Friday night. There are things most of the day Saturday and in the morning/early afternoon Sunday. If you do go, please let me know, or come and talk to me. Come and enjoy beer and haggis. There are dancers, singers, bands, vendors and enough plaid kilts to… well….

Saturday afternoon I’ll (most likely) be doing the celtic dancers. Friday I’ll be there all day doing set up.

Update 6/5/14: It seems I may not be doing the dancers this year. I may actually be doing sound. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what my role will be.

[countdown event=”Celtic Festival 2014″ date=”13 June 2014″ hour=”9″ minutes=”30″]

(Clock it set to time when I need to be in the plaza. Actual event starts in the evening)

Another year, another time for recap.

First and foremost, I found a very good job. It pays well and challenges my skill set somewhat. My co-workers are also very nice to work with. Admittedly it was a bit unnerving at first when people got laid off within a few weeks of me coming on, and then again when we were acquired by another company. However, I made it so far through the changes and it would be difficult for them to cut any deeper.

By June/July, I’ll be moving to Denver. I’ll be moving in w/ my GF of a year and it seems like it’s the time. Plus I’m in Denver most of the time anyways. The misgivings I mentioned in this post have been alleviated. Now it just a matter of when I move. It will be sometime in June

School goes.

I’ve lost some drive but I’ve found that taking a break for a few months restores it. I want to get it done and while I don’t expect to enjoy it, it shouldn’t be a chore like it is. I return in the fall and if the pattern holds, I’ll do two more groups of two classes and then want another break. In the end though, I only get charged when I take classes so I can do this at whatever pace I want.

As for health, I think I’m ok. Admittedly, my drive to be active just isn’t there. I want to play DDR more but I just don’t have the energy or lungs that I used to. I’m going to play at laser tag nationals in the fall so I need to at least get my sprinting up or I’ll be unable to compete. Hopefully, when I move to Denver, I’ll be able to run in the park near her apartment.

Honestly there isn’t a whole lot to report. But I’m here.
