Year 2017 in review

Ah, the year 2017! An interesting year! (just apparently not interesting enough to write about)

Year 2017 | 2017 to 2018

First and foremost, yes, I know that I haven’t been really using this in the year 2017. I think the same issue came up that I mentioned in the previous (non-guest) post. I really didn’t have that much overall to report. But as I like to do, here is my year in review.

So let’s go down the list.

Firstly, Ashley moved here from Utah after getting a job as a revenue manager at a hotel in Denver. She moved to an apartment on the north side of Greenwood Village (though technically it’s Denver). Needless to say, I am quite happy because of this. It was difficult maintaining a relationship with someone in a different city. Now we are twenty minutes from one another (if there is no traffic) and we meet up at least once a week (though often times more) plus we both get Sundays together due to my work schedule.

Speaking of work, while I am still with Trustwave in the year 2017, some things have changed. I don’t fault my previous boss, but he and I really didn’t gel well. I know he was trying hard, and with my constant need to change my schedule, I am sure I wasn’t the easiest to manage. However, he has since changed positions and has even changed countries so I hope he is happy with his new role.

Needless to say, my stress levels went down at work and my performance metrics have gone up. I get along great with my current boss and, while I may change jobs in the future, I am content where I am now. I am even getting along with people who hated me from day one. Not really sure what happened there, but I can’t complain about this new development.

Health-wise, I still have my cough that the doctor says is nothing to worry about. I am changing insurance in 2018 and will have a whole new crop of doctors so I will get a second opinion from the new doctors. Ever since changing bosses, my blood pressure has gone down. Additionally, thanks to a new diet, I’ve lost more weight. I plan on losing more weight in 2018. So far, I’ve lost around 30 pounds.

I did get a new vehicle. My old Honda CRV needed a lot of work to keep it driveable. However, I decided that it was time to get a new vehicle. To that end, I purchased a year 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

I do like the gas mileage and the features. Firstly, it gets about 35 MPG which is 15 higher than my old car. It is also a hybrid so it functions off electric motors and, in traffic, can do 40 MPG or higher. I have had some minor issues with it. For example, the nav system locks up sometimes, but a reboot fixes it. I did have one critical issue where it refused to start and I had to have it towed to the dealership. Here is hoping that doesn’t happen again.

Overall though, I’ve mostly been doing what I usually do. I’ve done a few new experiences with Ashley and said goodbye to old friends. For example, in year 2017, Julia, a former girlfriend whom I’d become quite close with ever since we broke up, moved away to Michigan. She wouldn’t know this as I tend not to let things like this show, but I nearly cried at her going away party. I tried to keep things light and happy though.

I did go and visit with Ashley’s family in Utah in September. We spent the weekend at a resort and I got to spend more time with them. The last time, I was there for Christmas and got to meet them briefly over an evening. For Christmas this year, we are doing it again, so that will be interesting. As a result of that, I will be doing Christmas with my family a week early, but it works out for both myself and my sister so that we can go see our other families.

In 2018, the plan exists to move in with Ashley. Once my lease is up we will move in. Not sure where yet, but in February-ish, we will start looking and see if we can find a place we like. My lease isn’t up until June so we have a little while.

Anyways, that is the basic happenings of year 2017. It wasn’t a majorly eventful year, but I will honestly try to do even more in 2018 as far as blogging. Just had too many irons in the fire this year.

Here is to 2018!

April Fools Day 2015 Prank

 April Fools Day 2015

April Fools Day 2015

As I do every year, I did an April fools day prank. Some years my pranks are more widespread. For this April Fools Day 2015, it was a bit more targeted at one person. However, I’ll post the article here so you can enjoy it.

She was expecting me to do something, so I simply stopped mentioning it. Then her friends all sent it to her. I went quiet and didn’t say anything all day.

Once it actually happens (I wrote this post 3/31/15), I’ll post reactions.

Reactions: I think she bought it at first. I made sure people messaging her were from different social groups and didn’t know each other. I’m sure there was some credibility at first, but in the end she didn’t believe it. Oh well.. it was fun. Boy do I love April Fools Day. I’m already planning my prank for next year. *evil grin*

Weekend with the family, but not mine.

Meet the parents

So this weekend was the weekend to meet the parents.

Julia graduated this weekend from Nursing school and her parents flew in for the occasion. As a bonus, Julia was throwing a party to celebrate and I invited my parents to the event. Therefore, I got to meet the parents and they got to meet each other as well all in the course of a weekend.

Overall, I think the weekend went well. We took them on a tour of Estes Park, took them to Casa Bonita (prepares for Coloradans to mock him) and generally had a very good time of it. Her parents are very nice. Her brother is about as much of a geek as I am. I look forward to many more such meetings in the future. Julia has a nice family.

There was talk of going out there in August (or was it October?) and I’d be happy to go to a state I’ve never been to.

2014 Year in Review

Red-Happy-New-Year-Cool-2014-Wallpaper[1]

I know it has been a bit since my last post. Often times, it can just be hard to find anything really relevant to write about. 2014 was a roller coaster of a year.

At the beginning of the year, I took a trip to Arizona with my then Girlfriend. I had never been there and it was exciting to go somewhere new. We saw the sights and generally did the tourist thing. We were there for an energy conference (think hippy energy not oil). It was interesting. Admittedly, it’s not my thing but I still enjoyed myself. What was funny is the fact that the day we left, it snowed in Denver. Then it was clear the entire time we were gone. Then it snowed again the day we got back.

I got a job working for Center Partners (now called Qualfon). While it wasn’t the best job I ever had, it certainly was nice. I actually liked coming to work every day. The atmosphere was relaxing once I got my stride on and it was nice to have a boss that was so relaxed about IT.

It wasn’t all happy times though. Around June/July my father was rushed to the ICU with a brain bleed. He did end up pulling through, but it was quite the ride. He is very lucky that he did. Between my mother and sister, hardly anyone left his side. I filled in when I could.

In July, I moved to Lakewood with my then Girlfriend.

I also started a new job up in Black Hawk working for one of the Casinos. I do admit that it isn’t my most favorite job ever (that would be Laser Storm), but it pays the bills and gave me some experience I didn’t have.

It was nice to finally be working in Denver. I spent just about every weekend down here as it was, so it made sense to find a job down here and just move. It brought me closer to my friends and basically allowed me to branch out.

Sadly, things didn’t work out so well with Girlfriend and we ended up breaking up. I lived with her for a time until I could find somewhere to live. Eventually I did, and it is where I am today. It’s a rather small place for the price, but it’s somewhere to call home. I now live in Arvada.

Just prior to moving to my new apartment, I met Julia. She was smart and funny and while it took me some time to fall in love, I did. I met her at a singles night and while, at first, I wasn’t sure what her intentions were, she made them clear and we started dating. My family seems to like her which is a big plus.

It is now 2015 and I am happy at this stage of my life. Admittedly, I am keeping my eyes open for other opportunities, but overall I am extremely happy. I am almost finished with my degree and hopefully that will open more doors for me.

Rain rain, please don’t go away

rainy-day-window[1]

While some might say that rain isn’t a good thing, I personally love it. I spent a good evening on a date walking in the rain and rather enjoyed myself. Rain has never bothered me.

However, here is a question I ask most people (admittedly stolen from a Star Trek Episode). I’d love to know what you think!

When it rains, do you run from doorway to doorway, trying to stay dry, getting wet all the while? Or do you just accept the fact that it’s raining and walk with dignity?

Personally, I do the latter, but what do you do?

Another day, another futile attempt at world domination

Well, I could go into detail about what is happening, but I really don’t want to tell the world about my specific issues. The short version is that I’ve been depressed for a long time now. Work is fine, it’s work. However, where I am lacking is in relationships. On Saturday night I had a minor breakdown. Nothing I couldn’t recover from, but I know where the pain lies. I need to do something about it, but it’s like banging my head against the wall. If I stop trying it hurts more. If I try, at least the pain stays the same. I want to keep moving forward but the past keeps pulling me back.

On other fronts I trek on. The 501c3 is going well, we’ve got a date planed for the board of directors meeting. This should be interesting. I’ve never been part of a board before. In all honesty I’m debating if I even want to be a part of the final result (i.e.: a board member) or just want to help planning. It’s not like I’d be able to in 5 years anyways. However it would certainly be an experience.

Anyways, I hope all is well dear reader. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

So long 2012

2012-2013-2It has been an interesting year for sure. Lots of changes in life. Lots of new friends crawling out of the woodwork, putting some good friends sadly to rest. Loss of a job yet new vistas opening up before me and some promising prospects in sight for 2013. Relationships ending, but new people entering my life. Acquaintances choosing to become a larger part of my life and become inner circle friends. All in all, a very good year if taken as a whole.

We shall see if this trend continues into 2013. I sure hope so!
